Tombstone Tuesday - Bemiss/Epps

Howard Lee Epps
1906 - 1977
Luella Mae (Bemiss) (Avery) Epps
1916 - 1988

I lost an old friend today. I am sad, and it made me miss my grandparents, Howard and Lu, Gramp and Gram.

Gramp (sometimes I called him Grump) was born in Oakley, Logan County, Kansas, on August 18, 1906. His parents were James "Jay" Riley and Sarah "Sallie" Bessie (Jones) Epps. He lived there until he and Gram were married on July 6, 1940, in Golden, Jefferson County, Colorado. They lived in Denver, Colorado, after that, and moved to Seattle, King County, Washington, in 1945, shortly before the end of World War II.

Gram was born in Grinnell, Gove County, Kansas, just a little way from Oakley, on August 28, 1916. Her parents were Fredrick James and Maud May (Morgan) Bemiss. She was raised in the Grinnell area. For just over four years, Gram was married to Carl Avery, with whom she had three children, including my mom. Gram and Gramp had two children together, but he was 'Daddy' to all five of the children.

Gram and Gramp were interred in a mausoleum at Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery in Seattle, Washington.
